zsl.org is the website of the Zoological Society of London, the group that operates the world famous London Zoo and Whipsnade Zoo.
ZSL was founded in 1826, around the concept of a London based zoological collection that would be based along the lines of the Jardin Des Plaints in Paris. This was during the Great Enlightenment, when Victorians began to take a great interest in the natural world and started to investigate the wonders of science, bringing samples from voyages around the globe. A London based collection would allow the public to see animals and plants from around the world firsthand. It should "interest and amuse the public" suggested the founders.
The land by Regent's Park was secured from the Crown and received a Royal Charter from King George IV in 1829. Soon after opening in 1828, London Zoo, as it had then become known, boasted the widest collection of animals in the world.
It was soon deemed that animals needed a more accurate habitat and open space to be observed more naturally. The society obtained land on the Chiltern Hills and created Whipsnade Park which was opened to the public in 1931 as the world's first open zoo.
Today the Society continues to manage both London Zoo and Whipsnade Zoo. It also has a scientific research division, The Institute of Zoology, which is funded by the government. As a charity, ZSL also seeks income and support from the public. The ZSL website incorporates several ways to do this.
zsl.org is the website representing all of the activity of the Zoological Society of London.
These are then spilt down in the following ways:
ZSL.org. regularly operate promotions with some of its attractions. These are usually in the form of voucher codes that can be used when ordering on the website. These may be 2 for 1 entries, further savings on family tickets, seasonal offers or promotions based on special events. These are often time based, so customers should carefully read the terms when planning their visit. The website also has comprehensive science and conservation areas, detailing the work that ZSL carries out around the world.
Both ZSL London Zoo and ZSL Whipsnade Zoo are open every day of the year except for Christmas Day. The zoos open at 10am each day, but closing times change seasonally throughout the year, ranging from 16:00 to 18:00. Last entry is always one hour before closing.
Delivery times depend on the product type. The ZSL.org website predominately sells non-tangible products, such as tickets and experiences. Delivery is therefore either in person on attendance to the zoo or, in the case of animal adoptions, via regular post. Tickets bought online through the ZSL.org site are e-tickets which are emailed to the address given when ordering. Customers should bring a legible print out of this email when they visit in order to avoid repayment and delays.
E-tickets cannot be refunded once purchased and cannot be resold without the prior written consent of ZSL and may result in non-admittance. Flexi tickets are only valid for three months from the date of purchase and cannot be transferred to other people or changed for other products. ZSL experiences, holidays and animal adoptions are subject to a range of refund clauses depending on purchased product type and dates. Full clarification can be found on the ZSL.org website under the shopping terms link.
The ZSL.org website is very secure and committed to ensuring that customer's online identity is protected at all times. Credit card details and personal information are encrypted using the latest technology which is regularly reviewed. The site uses a secure socket layer (SSL) which displays a padlock in the web browser when using the site.
The ZSL website does not use any customer review system but reviews of the zoos are widely available on tourist sites. The website does have a 'Social Hub' page which details all social media activity some of which includes customer reviews and comments.
