The history of Next begins in 1864 with the founding of Joseph Hepworth & Son in Leeds by tailor Joseph Hepworth.
In 1982 Hepworth & Son acquired Kendall & Sons Ltd, a Leicester-based rainwear and ladies fashion company, with the aim of developing it into a chain of womenswear stores. Designer Terence Conran was then chairman of Hepworth's and he recruited George Davies, who went on to become the chief executive of Next.
The Next womenswear brand was launched in 1982 with coordinated collections of own-branded "aspirational yet affordable" clothing and accessories placed in boutique-like settings. In the 1980s, the company expanded to include menswear, home interiors and children's wear.
In 1988 Next moved into home shopping with the popular Next Directory, and went online in 1999 with the launch of www.next.co.uk. Now the majority of Next's home shopping customers choose to shop online, which gives shoppers the added bonus of using Next voucher codes to obtain great discounts.
The 2000s saw more growth with the introduction of Next Flowers, and gift list service, followed by its luxury Signature range clothing and home accessories. In 2008 the Next Group acquired the young women's fashion brand, Lipsy.
It now has around 700 stores worldwide, with around 500 in the United Kingdom and Ireland, and another 200 in continental Europe, Asia and the Middle East.
Next was an official supplier of clothing and homeware to the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympic Games, providing Team GB with outfits for both the opening and closing ceremonies, uniforms for tech officials and reception staff, and home textiles for the athletes' village.
Opening times vary between stores, especially those located in shopping centres. High street stores are generally open from Monday to Saturday from 9am to 6pm, but some of the biggest stores stay open as late as 9.30pm.
