History of BHS Furniture
BHS (formerly known as British Home Stores) was started in 1928 by American entrepreneurs wanting to match the success of Woolworths. The first store opened in Brixton, London. The company quickly expanded, selling clothes, toys and home ware. BHS was the first to combine retail with in store cafes and restaurants, to encourage customers in and for them to have a longer, more relaxed shopping experience, also making the stores a place to meet.
Through the 1970s and 80s BHS took its stores into the brand new indoor shopping malls springing up at this time, such as the Mall Bexleyheath and Lakeside Shopping Centre. From 1977 to 1989, BHS branched out into hypermarkets, with the creation of SavaCentre stores in partnership the supermarket Sainsbury's. 1980 onwards proved a mixed bag for the brand, first with the closure of its only store outside the UK, in Dublin, Ireland, and then the opening of its branch in Gibraltar, its first overseas franchise.
BHS revamped its stores and began to place goods with higher profits on the shelves. In 1995, BHS was guided by famous design house 20:20 to launch an updated look and more friendly logo, becoming 'Bhs' with the aim of attracting a more sophisticated shopper. It has since reverted to BHS.
In 2000 Philip Green bought the BHS brand for £200 million, followed by the Arcadia Group, which includes Dorothy Perkins and Topshop. Green looked to make new customer bases for BHS by integrating other popular brands into BHS stores, such as Etam UK and Tammy, and closing standalone stores of Tammy completely.
In March 2015, UK-based Retail Acquisitions purchased BHS from the Arcadia Group with the aim of developing the brand further.
